Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I leave my Nokero product outside?

Yes. Our products are designed to endure the elements and withstand high temperatures outdoors. However, permanent exposure to rain, snow, and heat might degrade the electronics over time, potentially shortening the life of your Nokero product.

What if it rains? Is my Nokero product safe?

Nokero products are durable, rainproof, and built of impact-resistant ABS plastic. If your bulb or charger gets rained on, don't worry about it! However, our products are not completely waterproof, so don't submerge them in water. Our products can also withstand snow, but will last longer if not exposed to daily freezing/thawing.

Can I charge my Nokero product when it's cloudy?

We do not recommend charging your products behind a window or under cloudy conditions, as these methods are not as reliable or efficient as charging under direct sunlight.

How do I take care of my Nokero product?

Taking care of your Nokero product is easy. Simply place your Nokero device in direct sunlight for at least 6 hours to charge during the day and take it down at night to use as a light. Use a lightly damp towel or cleaning solution to carefully remove any sediment that collects on the solar panel over time. If you notice your device not working, it may be time to replace the batteries (please refer to FAQ: "How do I change the battery?" for more complete details).

How long will the power remain in my Nokero product?

Nokero products last at least 1 and a half years before needing to replace the rechargeable battery, if they are charged consistently. Make sure to charge your product in direct sunlight at least every few months, so as to recharge the battery and allow it to continue generating power.

How do I make sure I get the most sun during the day?

To make sure you're getting the most sun during the day, position your Nokero device to face the sun. If you plan on leaving it out in the sun for a while, a safe bet is to face the solar panel south (unless you're in the Southern Hemisphere—face north!). If you are using one of our products with a rotating solar panel feature, tilt the panel at a 45 degree angle when charging to best optimize direct solar contact. The best time to charge your device is between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

How much light do Nokero bulbs produce?

Here is a breakdown of all our bulbs currently on the market and how much light they produce:

  • N182: 10 lumens
  • N202: 20 lumens (High), 10 lumens (Low)
  • N222: 50 lumens (High, Flashing), 25 lumens (Low)

Simply put, a lumen is a measure of the total "amount" of visible light emitted by a source. The normal output from a 60-watt incandescent light bulb is about 740 lumens; however, unlike traditional light bulbs, our lights emit a bright, white light. The LEDs point directly downward so that all light shines in the direction that the light is pointing, instead of being lost to other directions like the light of an incandescent bulb.

My light won't turn on. What's wrong?

If your Nokero light won't turn on, first make sure that you are in a dark space. Each bulb has an integrated light sensor that detects how much light is in the room or outdoors. This feature ensures your light runs only when it needs to. If you are in a dark or dim area and the light still won't turn on, it may need to be charged. In this case, wait and charge the device in the sun for 8-12 hours before trying again. If the light still isn't working, you may need new batteries. Our batteries typically last for at least 500 cycles. You can replace the batteries with standard alkaline batteries if accessible or more preferably with a NiMH rechargeable battery to allow the solar panel to repower the light. If all these suggestions aren't working, contact our support team at and we will help you with the next steps.

How durable are Nokero lights?

Our Nokero lights are very durable and are designed to endure being dropped, scraped, squashed, baked, pinched, bumped, nicked, kicked, rained on, snowed on, hailed on and, of course, being handled by curious children. We use durable ABS plastic and all our products are shatterproof. Our products have been known to rust over long periods of time, but none of the internal circuitry is typically affected. If one of our products breaks and you think it shouldn't have, let us know and we can send you a new one.

What are common uses for Nokero bulbs?

Nokero products are particularly popular in disaster relief and humanitarian aid scenarios where electricity is unavailable. Our light bulbs can be used anywhere you need light off the grid. Popular uses are home and patio lighting, marine lighting, camping, cooking, outdoor recreation, reading, after-dark business, mining, construction, studying, or emergency lighting during unexpected blackouts.

How do I charge a Nokero phone charger?

Charging your device is extremely easy. Simply connect your phone to our solar charger. The N222 does not need to be in direct sunlight while charging, as it can store energy for later after sitting in sunlight all day.

How long does it take a Nokero charger to charge a cellphone?

The N222 will charge a simple cellphone in about 2 hours. Modern smartphones (e.g.Androids or iPhones) will not fully charge.

My phone won't charge, what's wrong?

First make sure you are using the correct adaptor to connect to your cellphone. The N222 is designed for phones commonly available in the developing world. It will not fully charge a modern smart phone (e.g.iPhone or Android). If your phone still isn't charging, email us at and we will help diagnose the problem.

How durable are Nokero chargers?

Like our family of Nokero lights, our chargers are also very durable. We use safe ABS plastic and all our products are shatterproof, weatherproof and designed to endure everyday drops, scrapes, and crunches. If you believe your Nokero charger broke unnecessarily or before it's time, let us know and we can send you a new one.
